SUMMARY:Independence Through Resilience – Reasonable Accommodations: What They Are and How to Get Them?
DESCRIPTION:Participants will work alongside advocate to do a brief evaluation of program activities thus far\, before jumping into activities relating to accommodations in the workplace and other settings. Participants will complete activities and questionnaires that help them define their learning style and support needs. We’ll watch videos that explain the disability disclosure process\, practice utilizing the job accommodation network’s directory of accommodations and review accommodations we each want more information on for our own disabilities\, and more! By participating in this training\, participants will have increased confidence in being able to work as a person with disabilit(ies) and will be equipped to self-advocate in the workplace. \n

DESCRIPTION:At this point in the training\, we have learned to describe our disabilities in our own words\, can identify the symptoms/barriers we experience as well as any triggers that impact our mental health. Now\, we will work on exploring coping strategies that we can utilize to help us cope with disability-related symptoms and both internal and external stressors. We’ll then tie in our disability awareness and showcase how coping strategies can help us improve upon emotional regulation and disability management. By strengthening these core skills\, participants will improve upon these basic components of resiliency and be better equipped for handling stress and workplace dynamics in a healthy manner. \n

DESCRIPTION:Youth from Friendswood HS  will learn about healthy reactions to challenges or problems that can arise with goals they set for themselves. We’ll complete activities geared towards creating positive inner self talk and how to handle failure or setbacks in a way that is not damaging to one’s self esteem or future goal setting efforts. By participating in this activity\, participants will strengthen their ability to set realistic goals\, will have an increased understanding of the importance of emotional regulation\, and will be able to practice positive self-talk in a peer setting.

SUMMARY:Youth Transition Program – Structuring our Goals
DESCRIPTION:Youth from Clear Brook HS and Clear Falls HS will learn how to take a goal and break it down into manageable steps. We’ll walk through a sample SMART goal\, collaborating as a group to determine the steps needed to accomplish the goal. The group will work together to draw\, write\, and discuss for each sample goal a reasonable time frame and the steps required to achieve the desired outcome of the example goals. By breaking down the steps of sample goals together as a group\, participants will have increased confidence and capacity in breaking down their own collective and individual goals as students.

SUMMARY:Independence Through Resilience - Understanding our Anxiety
DESCRIPTION:This training will focus on becoming disability aware and able to understand your individual strengths\, symptoms\, and barriers relating to having anxiety. We’ll take a dive into common experiences folks have with anxiety\, be able to identify specific symptoms and barriers we each deal with\, share our experiences in a peer support format\, and begin to implement a group awareness activity for tracking our symptoms and barriers\, as well as what prompts them. By participating in this training and practicing awareness skills in between training sessions\, participants will have a clearer understanding of their disability\, how it affects their day-to-day life\, and have the ability to begin disclosing their experiences and needs relating to their disability with others.

DESCRIPTION:Clear Creek ISD ACES program will be collaborating with MHI to learn how to prepare and cook a potato in the microwave. They will review the recipe steps before starting the cooking process\, prepare ingredients for toppings\, and clean-up directions. Participant will get to taste their finished product and take home a copy of the step-by-step recipe (including clean-up directions) if wanted. This will enable the individual to be better equipped for independently using the microwave to make a Lunch\, Dinner or Side Dish.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first in a series of vocational trainings called Soft Skills to Pay the Bills. In our first topic\, participants will engage in a number of activities that revolve around the importance of communication in the workplace. We’ll discuss the importance of being specific with our messaging\, review how communication changes in different settings and with different people\, hone in on nonverbal communication and the way it can make or break our interactions with others\, learn about how communication is a two-way process and how being unclear or vague can fuel conflict\, and end on how communication’s role in ensuring we understand instructions given to us. By participating in this training\, participants will have increased confidence in communicating effectively at home\, with their peers\, and in the workplace!
