SUMMARY:Mobility Management 101
DESCRIPTION:Mounting Horizons will be offering Mobility Training to learn about different public transportation options available for and around the Galveston County area. In the training\, participants will learn how to set up public transportation through their primary provider and connect with alternative options. Participates will be shown how to advocate on their transportation needs in varies platforms for example\, public meeting that deal with public transportation\, writing letters to local or state representatives\, voicing their ideas to funders over public transportation.  An Individualized Travel Plan (ITP) will be discussed and completed and participants will leave with a list of different service providers for their specific area\, if needed an application for para transit provider for their specific area and a copy of their Individualized Travel Plan (ITP).

SUMMARY:Youth Transition Program – Preparing for Life after High School
DESCRIPTION:Young adults from various high schools will engage in a game that will allow them to practice navigating postsecondary options such as:  apprenticeships\, trade schools\, and colleges that could prepare them for future jobs/careers. Consumer will briefly review how their communication passport can be used as a tool for self-advocacy when requesting accommodations in post-secondary spaces. We will also discuss options such as internships and volunteering and how those can also be ways to increase one’s skills and prepare young adults for future work or other goals. By participating in this training\, the consumer will have increased confidence in navigating their choices after they graduate high school.

SUMMARY:Independent Living Skills – Safety in Cooking
DESCRIPTION:Participant will take part in a Zoom introduction to the upcoming monthly cooking classes. Kitchen safety expectations will be reviewed with an open discussion regarding the “Why” for kitchen safety. For example: using an oven\, knives\, and raw meats. Planned class recipes will be discussed especially May’s which includes peanut butter – any nut allergies? Participant will discuss their likes/dislikes for certain foods. This will give the individual a chance to advocate for foods they enjoy eating and allow time to practice proper socialization/communication skills through peer interactions.

DESCRIPTION:Participant will hear feedback from advocates about the findings on doors for local restaurants\, stores\, and medical facilities and create an action plan for advocating for modifications to any doors that do not meet ADA requirements. By hearing from advocates and creating an action plan as a group\, the consumer will be able to strengthen skills relating to advocacy and teamwork\, while also getting hands-on experience with advocating for change within their local community.
